Frequently Asked Questions

Is it legal to check the temperature of my employees?

Generally, measuring an employee’s body temperature is a medical examination. Because the CDC and state/local health authorities have acknowledged community spread of COVID-19 and issued attendant precautions, employers may measure employees’ body temperature. However, employers should be aware that some people with COVID-19 do not have a fever.

Can PWT products be used to detect a virus such as the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19)?

A: No, thermal imaging cameras cannot be used to detect or diagnose an infection. PWT thermal cameras are used today in public spaces by essential services such as shopping malls and Gyms as an effective tool for measuring skin surface temperature. People who are identified as having an elevated skin temperature can then be screened by medical professionals.

How should skin temperature screening be performed?

A: Here are several tips to ensure optimal measurement performance from a PWT thermal camera:

  • Screen people, one at a time to look for temperature anomalies.
Screen people from 1 to 2 meters (3 to 6 feet) away.
Measure temperature near the tear duct (at the inner canthus) as this location provides the closest temperature correlation to the human core body temperature. This is not measuring core body temperature and readings near 35°C (95°F) are common.
Perform secondary screening on individuals with elevated skin temperature using a medical device designed specifically for measuring body temperature, such as a thermometer.

How does thermal imaging technology work?

The size of prints is determined by which iPad you use, as the cameras vary. We believe that you’ll be extremely satisfied with images printed at 4×6 and even 6×8 using the latest iPads.

PWT thermal cameras detect heat radiation and can be used to identify the surface temperature of objects and people. With this capability, PWT thermal cameras are commonly used as a non-contact screening tool to detect differences in skin surface temperatures and pattern changes.

How close do you need to be to detect someone with an elevated temperature?

In order to obtain a good temperature reading, it is recommended that the intended target be as close to the camera as possible.

It is important that the application is set up so that all intended targets are in focus during the screening process, thereby creating a good image.

  • Adjust the infrared image (automatically or manually)
  • Select a suitable temperature range
  • Select a suitable color palette
  • Change the measurement parameters

How accurate are the thermal cameras?

PWT thermal cameras “see” or detect the temperature differences with accuracies of ±0.3°C (0.5°F) at the recommended ambient temperate of 30°C to 45°C (86°F to 113°F). The standard PWT product accuracy specification of ±2°C or 2% of the temperature reading at 30°C (86°F) ambient environment applies to all temperature ranges it measures and for the multiple applications for which it can be used.

It’s important to note there are many factors that can affect the accuracy of thermal cameras, such as focus, distance, the emissivity* of the target, the ambient environment, and the speed at which the temperatures are acquired.

Do people using PWT cameras need to be certified/trained to understand how to interpret the images and data?

PWT recommends that thermal camera operators should schedule a crash course of thermal imaging training from our staff. This is not a medical training or medical certification, but it provides a baseline understanding of thermography.

Concerns over the spread of highly infectious illnesses like the COVID-19 have created the need for new health and safety procedures. Today, it’s critical to the safety of our employees and the community as a whole that employee health screenings are enforced. Temperature Screening Kiosks can act as the first line of defense to health threats within your facility. Using infrared thermal imaging and fast temperature detection, our touch-free kiosks alert to the presence of fever and the prospect of a contagious illness. Prevent the spread of viruses and maintain a safe and healthy workplace. More importantly, give staff, students, and visitors confidence in your safety protocols.

Temperature Screening Kiosks

The Temperature Screening Kiosk is a top-tier solution that will easily meet recommended health screening requirements. The thermal temperature scanner is reliable and accurate, offering an effective method for keeping sick persons out of your facility. Employee & visitor temperature screening has only become more critical as many state and local governments require return-to-work guidelines and COVID-19 response planning be established. Regulatory and health associations such as OSHA, EEOC, and the CDC include temperature screening as an important procedure in facilities now.

Highly Accurate Symptom ScreeningWhen it comes to accuracy, the Temperature Screening Kiosk leaves little doubt. It reads within a +/-0.9 degrees Fahrenheit variance. Individuals can keep a safe distance from one another, since the scanner can read from 3 feet, 4 inches back. Easily set a threshold temperature from anywhere between 50 Deg F up to 107.6 Deg F. An 8-in (800 x 1280) LCD screen projects result in crisp text and graphics. Paired with an industrial-class, 2-megapixel binocular camera and a thermal imaging module, plus an LED and IR dual floodlight, the temperature scanner can detect temperature and faces even in poor lighting conditions.

Fast, Contact-free Temperature ReadingIn case a sick individual does attempt entry, you should avoid skin-to-device contact and process symptom quickly so ill individuals can be removed. The Temperature Screening Kiosk requires zero contact with the device. As an added protection, the base is coated with an antimicrobial powder finish to help repel sickness-inducing organisms. The scanner is so fast, it reads an individual’s temperature in approximately 1 second. If abnormal body temperature is detected, an automatic alarm will activate. The alarm feature tells an obvious failed result – if it reads above your temperature threshold, the employee should not be allowed to enter.

Additional Access Control FeaturesThe Temperature Screening Kiosk offers additional features that may be enabled if your facility manages an access control system. An integration set-up is required and is managed by the customer.
Live Facial recognition: The Temperature Screening Kiosk comes with the ability to scan for facial recognition that matches an employee. Facial recognition can even process face-with-mask recognition, ideal for essential healthcare workers or employees entering your building wearing a face mask for extra protection.
Supplemental Peripherals: Expand gate passage via the kiosk with peripherals such as ID card readers and fingerprint readers that interact with your access control system (additional integration required).

Kiosk Base OptionsThe Temperature Screening Kiosk comes in three variations to meet multiple health screening locations. In each variation, the following same core features are included:

  • Direct power unit needing to be plugged into a power outlet
  • 8-inch device screen with LED status bar
  • Camera
  • Bundled software
  • Wi-Fi enabled
  • Temperature and facial recognition
  • Anti-microbial silver powder coat finish

Standard Pedestal Kiosk: The pedestal kiosk includes the scanner device mounted on a 60-inch, silver pedestal base. The entire base of this kiosk is covered with an antimicrobial powder coat finish. It comes with a direct power unit, as well as all the other core features noted above.

Coming Soon - Countertop Kiosk: The countertop kiosk’s shorter base is perfect for case uses where the temperature scanner will be placed on top of another elevated surface. The countertop scanner is only available with a direct power unit that needs to be plugged into a power supply. It comes with all the core features listed above.

Custom Configurations Available: Temperature Screening Kiosks can be custom configured with unique branding or optional features such as battery operation. Pricing and lead times will vary.

Availability: Our temperature screening kiosks are currently in high demand. The current lead time is 4-weeks for standard kiosks with additional time required for custom options (branding, battery options). Orders will be fulfilled on a first-come, first-served basis so we recommend getting your order in as soon as possible. Note: Due to the special-order nature of all of our temperature screening kiosks, we are unable to cancel orders after they have been placed. Temperature kiosks are ineligible for returns, except in the case of warranty repairs or replacement.

Use Cases: The Temperature Screening Kiosk is beneficial in any business or public environment but is particularly ideal for entry points, access gates to buildings, school campuses, healthcare clinics or hospitals, community events or public venues, hotels, retail stores, and transportation hubs. While temperature screening is applicable to any industry under COVID-19 symptom assessment guidelines, it is critically important to:
